Ablakwa Demands Probe into FDA’s Approval of Rice Shelf-Life Extension

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has called for an independent investigation into the Food and Drugs Authority’s (FDA) decision to extend the shelf life of 22,000 bags of rice distributed to secondary schools.

FDA’s Assurance vs. Public Concern

The FDA has maintained that its approval process adhered to established regulatory standards and best practices. However, Ablakwa has expressed concerns about the potential health risks to students who consumed the rice.

Speaking to Citi News, Ablakwa emphasized the need for transparency and accountability, urging local and international audits to scrutinize the FDA’s actions.

“They [FDA] have only conducted themselves in a manner that raises more questions. That is why an independent inquiry into this matter is crucial,” he remarked.

Criticism of Government Inaction

Ablakwa also criticized President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, accusing him of failing to address the controversy.

“It is really a shame that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is a leader who checked out long ago and so is taking no action,” Ablakwa stated.

This call for investigation highlights growing concerns over food safety and regulatory oversight, especially when it involves vulnerable populations like students.
