Approach this duty with wisdom and integrity – Mahama tells new Ghana Armed Forces Council

President Mahama has sworn-in new members of the Ghana Armed Forces Council with Vice-President, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as Chairperson.

The swearing-in took place on Monday, March 24, 2025, at the Ministry of Defence in Accra.

The new council has been charged with the mandate of providing strategic leadership and oversight that will ensure the Ghana Armed Forces remains an effective modern and discipline force.

The Council is expected to uphold the highest standard of governance, professionalism and accountability within the military as well as safeguard the welfare of military men and women who risk their lives in their service to the nation.

Members of the Council includes Vice-President, Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as Chairperson, Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, ⁠Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, Mr. Daniel Addo, Mr. Fuseini Iddrisu and Nancy Dakwa Ampofo.

President Mahama while addressing members of the council urged them “to approach their duties with wisdom, integrity and a deep commitment to national service” as their decisions will largely shape the future of Ghana’s Armed Forces.

The President further assured of his commitment to ensure that the military is equipped with the necessary tools as part of efforts to modernize the Ghana Armed Forces.

He outlined a number of major interventions to be instituted by government to ensure this is achieved.

“We will continue to prioritise capacity building programmes that enhance the expertise and skills of our personnel ensuring that they are equipped to handle both conventional and unconventional threats.

“Investment in modern military technique to strengthen our national defence capabilities. Enhance infrastructure development including improved barracks, training facilities and logistics support systems. Improved welfare and support system for military personnels and their families recognizing that the well-being of our Armed Forces extends beyond the battle field,” the President stated.

President Mahama said Ghana will continue to strengthen partnerships with regional bodies such as ECOWAS and the African Union as well other international allies to collectively address security challenges that affect not just Ghana but the entire globe.

He advised the Council to deepen the trust in the military by making sure corruption, misconduct and abuse of power becomes a thing of past in the military.
