Brave Driver Survives Highway Robbery, Drives to Safety Despite Gunshot Wounds

In a remarkable display of courage, 59-year-old driver Isaac Ayim survived a harrowing robbery attack on the Gomoa Akoti-Kwanyako highway in Ghana’s Central Region during the early hours of Saturday, January 11.

Ayim, driving a Kia truck with his assistant, Frimpong Kojo, encountered five armed robbers who attempted to stop their vehicle by flashing torchlights. Sensing danger, Ayim refused to stop, prompting the robbers to open fire.

Several bullets pierced the windscreen, with some striking Ayim in the head. Despite his injuries, he managed to drive himself and his assistant to the nearest police checkpoint for assistance, ensuring their safety.

Recounting the ordeal, Ayim said: “We were told robbers were on the road, so we waited at Akraman before proceeding. When we finally drove off, someone flashed a light at us, but I didn’t stop, fearing it was the robbers. They started shooting, and though I was hit, I kept driving until we reached the police station.”

Ayim was initially treated at the Gomoa Potsin Polyclinic before being transferred to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba, where he is currently receiving further care.
