All shops and businesses along Asafoatse Nettey Road and parts of the Central Business District (CBD) are expected to close temporarily on Friday, February 28, 2025, as the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) rolls out the maiden edition of the Regional Sanitation Day clean-up exercise.

In a statement, issued on Thursday, 27th February 2025, Public Relations Officer of the AMA, Gilbert Nii Ankrah, said the exercise, in collaboration with the Regional Environmental Health Directorate would take place from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM and focus on the stretch between the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and the Ghana Fire Service Training School.

The statement noted that businesses operating along the designated route would be required to temporarily halt operations to facilitate a thorough clean-up adding that activities would include the removal of sand from roadside kerbs, sweeping of streets and public spaces, weeding of overgrown areas, and general waste collection within the Central Business District (CBD).

Although the primary focus would be on Asafoatse Nettey Road, Ankrah said similar clean-up activities would be undertaken in other parts of the CBD to ensure a city-wide impact.

The Assembly urged the general public to bring out their sanitation tools and actively participate in the clean-up exercise to ensure a successful sanitation effort.

The statement assured the public of the AMA’s commitment to sustaining the exercise as part of broader efforts to improve sanitation in Accra, calling for full stakeholder cooperation to ensure a cleaner and healthier city.
