SSNIT, HANDS OFF OUR PUBLIC TOILETS
Indigenous business operators at the GICEL Estate Business Center are urgently calling on the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to stop Gicel from selling public toilet facilities to private individuals, as these transactions have led to a severe public sanitation crisis within the area.
The decision to sell public toilets, which are now being converted into private shops, has drastically reduced public access to essential sanitation facilities.
This situation has led to an increase in open defecation and “shit-and-throw” practices, posing a serious health risk to the thousands of people who visit the business center daily.
With over 5,000 visitors, business owners, and employees frequenting the center for various activities, the demand for accessible toilet facilities is critical.
The lack of proper sanitation options is resulting in an unhygienic and unsafe environment, which not only affects public health but also threatens the reputation and operation of local businesses.
We are asking SSNIT/ GICEL private halt the sales of the the public toilet to immediately restore sanitation standards at the GICEL Estate Business Center.
SSNIT and GICEL should recognize the impact of these actions on public health and work to reinstate these facilities. Otherwise, we will be compelled to take further action to safeguard our community and businesses.
