The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has intercepted a shipment of ammunition concealed in a 40-foot container at the Tema Harbour. The container, which was declared to contain vehicles and personal effects, was discovered to hold firearms, ammunition, and accessories during a routine examination.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, the Commissioner of Customs, Brigadier Zibrim Ayorrogo, disclosed that the container, imported from the United States, was flagged during an inspection at the Golden Jubilee Terminal on November 15.
The examination revealed the following concealed in three suitcases:
- 53 sidearms (pistols)
- 74 magazines
- 65 rounds of live ammunition
- 1 pistol holster
The Customs team immediately alerted the GRA’s Intelligence and Investigations Unit, as well as the Preventive Unit, who confirmed the discovery. The items were seized, and the entire container was detained for further scrutiny.

The agent and the importer’s representative linked to the shipment were arrested and transferred to the Marine and Railway Police Station in Tema for further investigation.
Brigadier Ayorrogo emphasized the importance of vigilance in customs operations to prevent the illegal entry of arms into the country, reiterating the GRA’s commitment to national security.
