Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has addressed criticism surrounding his endorsement of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer for the 2024 general elections. His remarks come amid reactions from political figures, including former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen, now leader of the Movement for Change.
Kufuor’s Defense of His Decision
Speaking at a mini-rally in Abuakwa South on November 27, Mr. Kufuor explained that his endorsement of Dr. Bawumia was a result of a thoughtful evaluation of the latter’s leadership qualities, track record, and vision for Ghana.
“I am facing criticism for voicing my opinions on national matters due to my position as a statesman. Experience and wisdom are often associated with age,” Kufuor noted.
The former president highlighted Dr. Bawumia’s significant contributions during his tenure as Vice President and as a member of the Bank of Ghana team, especially during periods of economic difficulty.
“During my administration, he was part of the Bank of Ghana team and demonstrated remarkable performance during a challenging period when Ghana was in financial distress. Their efforts were instrumental in revitalizing the economy at that time,” he added.
Call for Unity and Respect in Political Discourse
Mr. Kufuor urged Ghanaians to focus on selecting leaders capable of advancing the nation’s development. He emphasized the importance of respecting diverse opinions within the democratic process while prioritizing the country’s stability and progress.
“The ultimate goal should be to prioritize the nation’s development and stability over personal disagreements,” he said.

Context of the Endorsement
Kufuor’s endorsement of Dr. Bawumia has fueled debates within political circles, with some viewing it as a divergence from the NPP’s tradition of neutrality among senior party statesmen. However, the former president reaffirmed his loyalty to the NPP, stating that his decision reflects his commitment to the party’s values and vision.
This defense highlights Kufuor’s role as a key figure in shaping political discourse ahead of the 2024 elections, while advocating for unity and focused leadership.
