The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) CEO, Dr. Dacosta-Aboagye, has confirmed that the Free Dialysis Policy will roll out in 40 selected health facilities starting December 1. The initiative, estimated to cost the government GHC20-57 million annually, aims to alleviate the financial burden of renal disease care.
At a press briefing on November 26, Dr. Dacosta-Aboagye announced that all preparations with facility heads have been finalized, and the facilities will submit electronic claims for reimbursement. He added that 30 new dialysis machines have been acquired, with seven already cleared and 23 awaiting clearance at the ports.
The policy targets approximately five million Ghanaians suffering from renal conditions. Current dialysis costs range between GHC300 and GHC1,000 per session, with patients requiring at least four sessions weekly.
