Herbert Krapa Urges NDC Government to Focus on Power Sector Management

Former Energy Minister Herbert Krapa has urged the newly elected NDC government to prioritize effective management of Ghana’s power sector instead of attributing challenges to the previous administration.

His remarks came in response to allegations by John Jinapor, Co-Chairman of the Transition Team’s Energy and Natural Resources sub-committee, who warned of an impending power crisis due to depleted fuel stock. Jinapor claimed that “massive load shedding looms,” raising concerns about energy stability.

In a strongly worded statement, Mr. Krapa dismissed these claims as baseless, emphasizing that load shedding results from technical issues, emergencies, or poor management, rather than inadequate fuel reserves left by the previous administration. He highlighted that sufficient supplies of light crude oil and heavy fuel oil were secured for key power plants, including Cenpower and AKSA.

Krapa advised the new administration to focus on proactive measures to ensure stable electricity supply. He pointed to the Akufo-Addo administration’s efforts in maintaining consistent power delivery over the past eight years, noting that proper planning and procurement were essential to keeping the lights on.

“The NDC government should focus on procuring additional liquid fuel when needed to complement gas supply and planning effectively to avoid disruptions,” he stated. “We did it, and they can too, if they try. Finger-pointing is not the solution.”

Krapa’s comments underscore the importance of collaboration and strategic planning in addressing Ghana’s power sector challenges.
