Julian Lewis will take Shedeur Sanders’ place with the Colorado Buffaloes
Deion Sanders continues to bolster his coaching staff at Colorado, and his latest addition has drawn attention across the college football landscape.

Former NFL quarterback and Super Bowl-winning offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich is now on board to mentor the Buffaloes’ signal-callers.
With Shedeur Sanders preparing for the NFL, Leftwich will play a key role in shaping Colorado’s next starting quarterback, a battle currently unfolding between Kaidon Salter and freshman standout Julian Lewis.
As the competition heats up, one person who couldn’t hold back his excitement about the coaching shake-up is Julian Lewis’ father, T. Carlton Lewis.
Taking to X on March 20, he expressed enthusiasm over the pairing of his son with two seasoned coaches.
“So Ju gets to be coached by Byron Leftwich and Pat Shurmur in college!” he wrote, referring to the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers OC and Colorado’s current offensive coordinator.
But his excitement didn’t stop there.
In a follow-up post, he hinted at the bigger picture.
“In College! When God has a plan for you, sit back and-like Ju told me two months ago-‘God has been cooking; let him cook.’ Even if for only one season of his career, that’s Check Mate!”
While some took this as a sign that Julian Lewis might not stay long at Colorado, his father later clarified that he was actually referring to Leftwich’s potential trajectory.
“Coach Leftwich in my eyes will be similar to Kingsbury in college before heading to Washington. That is what I meant by 1 year for clarity…” he explained.
This comparison draws a parallel between Leftwich and Kliff Kingsbury, who briefly coached at USC before returning to the NFL as Washington’s offensive coordinator. If Lewis’ prediction holds, Leftwich’s time in Boulder could be brief, but his impact on CU’s quarterbacks could be significant.
Meanwhile, Julian Lewis is already making his presence felt in Colorado.
With Sanders searching for a leader to take over under center, Lewis is battling Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter for the starting role.
Coach Prime has emphasized leadership and decision-making as key qualities he’s looking for in his next QB1.
“Being able to see the field, being able to rally those guys around … You’ve got to have a bona fide leader,”Sanders said.
While it remains to be seen who will emerge as Colorado’s starter, T. Carlton Lewis sees the coaching staff as a game-changer for his son’s development.
And with the quarterback battle heating up, all eyes will be on Boulder as the next chapter of the Buffaloes’ offense takes shape.
