The Ivy League college could lose all of its federal funding as part of an investigation into potential violations of Title IX, a historic federal civil rights law passed in 1972 that prohibits sex discrimination in any school or educational program that receives federal funds.
Each administration has the power to interpret this legislation. Trump and other critics of transgender athletes competing in women’s competitions argue that these athletes have an unfair advantage. On February 5, the Republican leader signed an executive order aimed at fulfilling one of his main campaign promises: to ban transgender women from competing in women’s sports.
The University of Pennsylvania received nearly $1 billion in federal funding last year. The San Jose State University and the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association are also under investigation for possible Title IX violations, but the freezing of the $175 million, according to Fox News, is not a direct result of these investigations.
That university first made headlines in the 2022 season when Lia Thomas, a transgender athlete, competed on the women’s team and became the first transgender person to win a national championship by completing the 500 yards (457 meters) in freestyle swimming in 4 minutes and 33.24 seconds.
Trump has also spoken out against transgender people in the military, arguing that military service should be reserved for those “mentally and physically fit for duty,” but a judge blocked that executive order this past Tuesday
