Amenfi West, 16th November 2024 — The recent capsizing of a truck carrying 700 bags of cocoa on the Amoaku Bridge has sparked a wave of criticism and political blame. Eric Afful, the MP for Amenfi West and NDC parliamentary candidate, attributed the collapse to the current NPP government, claiming that negligence and halted infrastructure projects were at the heart of the incident.
The accident occurred late on 14th November, when a heavily loaded tipper truck fell off the weakened bridge, completely destroying it. Residents noted that the bridge had suffered damage before and was temporarily repaired in September, but it remained in poor condition.’

At a gathering in Wassa Amenfi West, Afful alleged that the bridge reconstruction was initially approved in 2016 under the NDC government, with work starting before the elections. However, he claimed that after the NDC’s electoral defeat, the NPP government halted the project without explanation, leaving it abandoned.
“This tragedy is a reminder of the consequences of poor governance,” Afful said, criticizing the government’s commitment to infrastructure and public safety. He recounted failed efforts to get the contractor back on-site, with the abandoned materials left to deteriorate over time.
The incident has reignited debates about political interference in public projects and the impact on essential infrastructure, raising questions about the government’s priorities regarding road safety and development.
