MP calls for major overhaul of Zoomlion sanitation contracts over non-performance

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Sanitation and Water Resources has called for a major reset in Ghana’s sanitation sector, citing long-standing concerns about underperformance and a lack of accountability in contracts awarded to Zoomlion Ghana Limited, a subsidiary of the Jospong Group.

MP for Mampong, Kwaku Ampratwum Sarpong, speaking during a committee engagement on Monday, April 14, declared that it would no longer be “business as usual” for Zoomlion, adding:

“It appears that every assembly has an issue with Zoomlion’s underperformance and non-performance, and it’s something that has been going on for many years.”

This follows serious allegations from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), which raised red flags over the government’s fumigation contract with Zoomlion.

According to the AMA, many of the contracts were signed without involving key local stakeholders, limiting oversight and verification.

Florence Kuukyi, AMA’s Director of Public Health, criticized the lack of transparency, saying:

“All these contracts are always signed at the blind side of the implementers. So most of the time, even, you are just there, and they’ll bring you a report… I have never witnessed one fumigation.”

She called for an immediate review and repackaging of the Sanitation Improvement Package (SIP) contract to include local implementers in the planning and monitoring process.

Yes, they not performing well at all. I have my bill for the whole, 2025, to empty my rubbish bins weekly. But since the beginning of 2025, they have only emptied my bins only 4 times.
