National Peace Council to Facilitate Peace Pact Ahead of December 7 Elections

The National Peace Council is set to convene a crucial meeting today, Thursday, November 28, with all political parties and their presidential candidates in Ghana’s upcoming December 7 elections. The objective is to sign a peace pact aimed at ensuring a peaceful electoral process.

Details of the Peace Pact

The agreement obliges candidates to commit to upholding peace before, during, and after the elections. Rev. Dr. Ernest Adu-Gyamfi, Chairman of the National Peace Council, expressed optimism about the event, noting that parties have been cooperative in reviewing the pact.

“We have commitments for all of them…so far, we have not had any adverse reactions from any of the parties,” he stated.

Potential NDC Absence Sparks Concerns

Despite widespread participation, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has cast doubt on its involvement. The party’s Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, previously stated that the NDC’s attendance depends on six conditions, including requiring key state officials—such as the President and the Inspector-General of Police—to also sign the pact.

It remains unclear if the NDC will send representatives to the ceremony, raising questions about their stance on the peace process.
