Oheneba Nana Asiedu Granted Bail for Publishing False News

Oheneba Nana Asiedu, a Kumasi-based radio and television presenter, has been granted bail following his arrest on Saturday, November 23, 2024. The arrest was in connection with allegations of publishing false news that could potentially disturb public peace.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command invited Oheneba Nana Asiedu on Friday, November 22, 2024, over claims that he had urged voters to cast their ballots for presidential candidates on different days during the upcoming December general elections.

The Ghana Police Service described the presenter’s statement, which circulated widely on social media, as “false and likely to disturb the public peace.” Authorities warned that such misinformation could lead to voter confusion and erode public trust in the electoral process.

Electoral Rules and Reactions
Under Ghana’s electoral regulations, voting for all candidates occurs on the same day. The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) condemned the incident, highlighting the critical role of accurate information during elections in maintaining peace and stability.

The NCCE encouraged the public to rely solely on official sources for electoral updates, stressing that misinformation could undermine the integrity of the elections.
