The report is received from the Ashanti regional community of Bepoase within the Afigya Sekyere South district of Ashanti region that some police officers have beaten up one Kofi Acheampong to death. Per narration, the police stormed a ghetto to pick a group of guys.
On their way back from the hideout, the police intercepted the deceased and claimed to have found an amount of Indian Hemp in his possession. In the process, the police phoned Kofi’s dad demanding cash amount of GHC3,000.00. The father according to reporter John Boye, could not afford to pay.
Meanwhile, some of the guys managed to make provision for GHC1,000.00. each.
Later the police reportedly negotiated with Kofi’s dad to pay GHC1,500.00. On the following day, he was called to send GHC50 for transportation to transport his ward for medical care reasons being that he went unwell while in police custody.
Later, Master Kofi Acheampong was found lying helpless in the bushes at the outskirts of town.
Youth of the area have since worn red clothes to demonstrate in seeking justice in the matter. John Boye further reported that medical doctors at the Wiamoase SDA Hospital said Kofi’s blood temperature was around 240 upon arrival with signs of physical assault.
Chief Superintendent Steven Boadu the Asaam police command has denied responsibility saying, the said operation that is under criticism for the death of the young man was carried out by the regional command and that his team shall embark upon the due followups to ensure full investigation.
