Police Restore Calm After Fatal Clash at Newmont Mining Site

The Ghana Police Service has successfully restored order in Ntotros, Ahafo Region, following a deadly confrontation during an attempted security breach at the Newmont Mining site on Wednesday night, January 8, 2025.

The suspects reportedly attempted to steal gold from the mining site, triggering a violent clash with security personnel. The incident resulted in the deaths of three individuals and injuries to four others.

Community Engagement to Maintain Peace

The deceased, identified as Muslims, are to be released to their families for burial in accordance with Islamic customs. Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, held urgent talks with community leaders and youth overnight to stabilize the situation, successfully averting potential reprisals and further escalation.

Ongoing Investigations

A special investigation team has been dispatched from Accra to conduct a thorough inquiry into the incident. Additionally, a reinforcement team has been deployed to maintain peace and order in the area.

Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Assistant Commissioner of Police and Director of Public Affairs, assured the public that investigations are underway and that justice will be served. “We urge the community to remain calm as we diligently work to uncover the facts and ensure such incidents do not recur,” she stated.
