President John Dramani Mahama has renewed his commitment to addressing Accra’s perennial flooding challenges with the formation of a 7-member Anti-Flood Taskforce to tackle the problem head-on.
The Taskforce, chaired by Deputy Chief of Staff (Operations), Mr. Stanislav Xoese Dogbe, began its work on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, with a comprehensive assessment of flood-prone areas across the capital.

The Taskforce assured Ghanaians of their resolve to identify sustainable engineering solutions to prevent future flooding disasters.

The Taskforce, currently on its third day of meetings, embarked on an aerial reconnaissance mission over critical flood-prone zones such as Weija, Sakumo Ramsar Site, and the Tema Fishing Harbour area. The aim is to gather essential data to guide the implementation of long-term engineering solutions and flood prevention measures.

A road reconnaissance exercise is also scheduled to enable a ground-level assessment of vulnerable areas.
In a briefing, the Deputy Chief of Staff disclosed that immediate actions, including the desilting of major drains, would commence soon.
This will be carried out by the 48 Engineers Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces in collaboration with local government authorities.
Brigadier General Richard Kinney, Commander of the 48 Engineers Regiment, noted that indiscipline on the part of residents, such as building in waterways, has been a major contributor to the persistent floods.
He emphasized that strict measures, including preventing illegal construction in waterways, will be enforced.
