The directive, signed by Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, was addressed to the Chief Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, January 14, 2025.

According to the notice, the recall is part of efforts by President John Dramani Mahama’s government to streamline the issuance of official travel documents and ensure their proper use in line with national and international standards.

It also says this directive aims to safeguard the integrity of Ghana’s diplomatic engagements by preventing the misuse of these high-level passports.

What’s next?

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been tasked with notifying all holders of Diplomatic and Service Passports issued by the previous government to return their documents.

The notice sets a compliance deadline of January 24, 2025, for all concerned individuals to return the passports.

A thorough verification process will be undertaken to ensure that the returned passports meet the current eligibility criteria for issuance.

Diplomatic and Service Passports are typically reserved for government officials, diplomats, and certain high-ranking individuals representing the country on official business. Their misuse can pose significant security and reputational risks for the country.
