Accra, November 28, 2024 – The Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange project, set to be inaugurated on Friday, November 29, will feature a protective fence around the roundabout leading to Kaneshie, aimed at preventing unauthorized activities such as hawking.
This announcement was made by Resident Engineer Owusu Sekyere Antwi during an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show. He emphasized that the measure is part of a broader effort to maintain the functionality and aesthetic of the newly constructed interchange.
Addressing Challenges Through Proactive Measures
The interchange, designed to alleviate years of chronic traffic congestion, could face issues if left unmanaged, according to Mr. Antwi. Drawing lessons from the recently inaugurated Flower Pot Interchange, where hawker activity has become a concern, he highlighted the importance of taking preemptive action.
“We are planning to fence the roundabout to prevent hawking around the area,” he explained.
Restoration of the Obetsebi Lamptey Statue and Additional Features
The project will also see the restoration of the iconic Obetsebi Lamptey statue, which was temporarily removed during construction. The Resident Engineer revealed that the statue will be placed within a designated area where visitors can learn about its historical significance.
“We will also construct walkways such that vehicles will not be able to climb them,” Mr. Antwi added, emphasizing efforts to ensure pedestrian safety and preserve the integrity of the area.
Advisory for Travelers Amid Construction-Related Traffic
As final works are completed, travelers are advised to avoid using the stretch from Circle to Kaneshie due to heavy traffic.
“The traffic situation around the construction area has been challenging all week because of ongoing excavations. Those coming from Awudome are advised to use the route behind the cemetery toward the TV Africa road,” Mr. Antwi advised.
