Transition Team Dispute Over Last-Minute Recruitment and Payments

The spokesperson for the Bawumia campaign team, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has defended the outgoing Akufo-Addo government amidst criticism from the Mahama Transition team regarding last-minute recruitments and financial decisions.

Speaking on Friday, December 13, Aboagye questioned the opposition’s objections, emphasizing the employment of Ghanaians.
“These are Ghanaians getting employment. Why are you complaining? Why is it a problem if a Ghanaian is being employed? I don’t think anybody should have an issue when a Ghanaian is being employed,” he remarked.

However, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, spokesperson for the Mahama Transition team, expressed concerns over these late-stage actions. He described the government’s decisions as “worrying,” citing fiscal implications for the incoming administration.

Key points raised by Kwakye Ofosu include:

  • Last-Minute Recruitment: Concerns over financial burden on the incoming government.
  • Payments to ECG-Linked Entity: A proposed payment of GH₵240 million to an entity connected to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has been flagged for further scrutiny.

“We have picked up information and documentation relating to efforts to pay over GH₵240 million to an entity supposed to have done some business with the ECG. If it were being paid to IPPs to keep the power on, one perhaps would not have an issue. But this payment seems less critical,” Kwakye Ofosu noted.

He called for these payments and recruitments to be halted, underscoring the importance of allowing the incoming government to make key decisions.

“We raised strong objections to these maneuvers and requested that they be put on hold. The government side agreed to this, and we will forcefully insist that this is a dangerous precedent,” he added.

This clash highlights tensions during the transitional period as both teams navigate governance and fiscal responsibility.
