The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced that any votes cast for the late Madam Akua Donkor, former flagbearer of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), in the 2024 presidential elections will be considered invalid.
According to Samuel Tettey, Deputy EC Chair for Operations, votes for Madam Donkor, who passed away on October 29, 2024, will be categorized as rejected ballots and excluded from the final vote count. Her name and party logo remain on the ballot, as the printing process began before her death.
The GFP’s effort to replace her with Philip Kubi, her former running mate, was unsuccessful. The EC disqualified Kubi due to errors and irregularities in his nomination documents. Despite being given an opportunity to address these discrepancies, EC Chair Jean Mensa stated that some issues in Kubi’s documents were deemed illegitimate according to electoral laws, leading to his disqualification.
