The West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) is set to commence a comprehensive maintenance and inspection exercise on its pipeline infrastructure starting Monday, November 25, 2024. This initiative is part of WAPCo’s regular maintenance schedule to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP).
According to a statement from the company, the inspection will take place in two phases, covering the pipeline from Itoki in Ogun State, Nigeria, to Takoradi in Ghana’s Western Region. This process is a regulatory requirement, aligning with global industry standards to maintain the integrity of the pipeline across West Africa.
The first phase, lasting 10 days, will focus on the onshore pipeline segment in Nigeria. WAPCo has assured stakeholders that gas transportation services will remain unaffected during this period, as thorough consultations were conducted prior to the operation.
The second phase, beginning in January 2025, will involve the offshore pipeline section from Badagry in Lagos State, Nigeria, to Takoradi, Ghana. This phase will include a temporary suspension of reverse gas flow from Ghana’s Western Region to Tema and a shutdown of key facilities in Tema, Lomé (Togo), and Cotonou (Benin). Additionally, WAPCo plans to replace sub-sea valves at critical points to enhance safety.
This inspection falls under WAPCo’s five-year maintenance cycle, with the previous major inspection conducted in January 2020. The company has reiterated its commitment to continuous stakeholder engagement to ensure a smooth execution of the project.
