We need specific timelines for ‘nkoko nkitinkiti’ policy – Kareweh tells Mahama

General Secretary of the General Agriculture Workers Union (GAWU) Edward Kareweh has urged President Mahama to provide specific timelines for implementing the small-scale poultry (nkoko nkitinkiti) policy.

President Mahama, in his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Thursday, February 27, 2025, stressed that his government is committed to implementing “nkoko nkitinkiti” programme to reduce the $300 million the country spends on the importation of chicken annually.

Speaking to 3FM, Edward Kareweh stated “This is a laudable policy but the question one will ask is, is it going to be done under one year, two years or three years or four years? But we assume that this needs to be done within four years,” he questioned.

The General Secretary, however, believes “if Ghana cannot do anything at all, it should be self-sufficient when it comes to poultry production and be able to export.”

He also tasked President Mahama to be realistic in his promises to Ghanaians.

“If you don’t take care, you will list several promises but won’t be able to achieve them. Some things cannot be realised within four years, so the President should have at least two or three major areas to work with,” Edward Kareweh said.

The “nkoko nkitinkiti” programme is a campaign promise of the NDC aimed at boosting poultry production and creating jobs for the youth through enhanced support for poultry farmers, affordable feed production and expanded services.

In his recent SONA, President Mahama said the programme will cover 55,000 households producing eggs and fresh poultry for the market.
